WSSD Lower School is a Waldorf elementary education for grades 1 through 5 in San Diego — where children don’t just learn, they become thinkers. These are the years the academic foundation is laid, and laid to last: strong in the basics, rich in the arts, taught by a teacher who stays. Here, a maths concept is drawn before it is written and a historical era is sung as well as studied.
This is where the foundation gets built. And it lasts.
We know that a child who feels a subject remembers it. Every morning opens with the main lesson, an unhurried block on one subject, long enough for a child to enter it fully. And across these years, a class teacher stays with the same children, coming to know each as a learner — their gifts, their stretches, where help is needed. That is what makes the foundation last.
The lower school years, in brief
Where curiosity takes shape
Grades 1 through 5 are years of deep imagination and steady growth. At WSSD, this is where the academic foundation gets built — reading, writing, and mathematics taught through storytelling, art, music, and hands-on discovery rather than worksheets and screens. The Waldorf elementary curriculum unfolds in focused blocks, three to four weeks on a single subject, and every school day opens with a two-hour main lesson. Children move from wonder to understanding here — not because it is forced, but because WSSD makes learning irresistible.
One teacher, five years
One teacher who truly knows your child
In most schools a child meets a new teacher every September and spends the first months simply being learned. At WSSD, one main lesson teacher stays with the class as it moves up through the grades — long enough to know each child deeply: their strengths, their stretches, the way they think. Children learn best when they love their teacher, and that kind of trust takes time to build.
Around that steady relationship, special-subject teachers bring their own expertise in Spanish, music, handwork, eurythmy, and gardening. And across every subject, academics arrive through the arts — a math concept drawn and painted, a story acted out, a science lesson walked through the school garden. It is an arts-integrated elementary education, and it is what makes the learning stick.
A curriculum that unfolds, grade by grade
Across all five grades, students build the core — language arts and mathematics — alongside science, history, Spanish, music, handwork, eurythmy, gardening, and games. Each year meets the child at a new stage of imagination and growth.
Why families choose WSSD for these years
A teacher who stays
One main lesson teacher walks with the class as it grows — building the kind of trust that makes a child want to learn, and the kind of knowledge of each child that a single school year can never allow.
Academics through the arts
Reading, writing, and math arrive through story, painting, music, and movement. It isn’t enrichment around the edges — it is how every subject is taught, and it is why the learning lasts.
A screen-free childhood
The early grades at WSSD are screen-free by design. Children build attention, imagination, and a love of the real world before a device ever asks for their focus.
Small classes, a steady community
Small classes mean every child is known — and because families stay, the community around your child grows steadier with every year.
The questions Lower School parents ask
How big are the lower school classes?
Lower school classes at WSSD are small — around 16 students on average. Small enough that the class teacher knows every child well, across every year they are together.
Does WSSD offer before- and after-school care?
Yes. Extended Care is available before and after the school day across the grade levels. For current hours and fees, contact the school office at (619) 280-8016.
When can my child start first grade?
A child must turn 6 by May 1 to be eligible to begin Grade 1 at WSSD. Children younger than that are welcomed into the Early Childhood program, which prepares them gently for the move into the grades.
What does a Waldorf elementary curriculum cover?
The full academic core — language arts and mathematics — taught in focused blocks alongside science, history, Spanish, music, handwork, eurythmy, gardening, and games. Academics are taught through storytelling, art, and hands-on work, and each grade follows a curriculum shaped to the child’s stage of development.
Can my child join WSSD part way through the lower grades?
Yes — WSSD welcomes new students into grades 1 through 5, and admissions runs year-round on a rolling basis. The process starts with an inquiry and a tour; after that, a child spends a visiting day with the class so the fit is real before any decision. Contact admissions at (619) 280-8016.
